Just like there are rules on what you can and can’t put in your regular dumpster, you can’t just throw anything in a roll-off dumpster. Roll-off dumpsters can be a huge time saver at your worksite, but regulations on what can go in the trash and what can’t still apply. The federal government, Nevada law, and Las Vegas city ordinance regulate what can end up in landfills to protect our environment from long-term impact. Throwing hazardous and not accepted waste away in a roll-off dumpster can result in fines, but more importantly, could start dangerous fires or contaminate our groundwater if it’s not disposed of properly.
So, what can, and can’t you throw away in a roll-away dumpster? Luckily, you can throw almost any trash in a roll-off dumpster. They’re great for construction and demolition debris, yard waste from large landscaping projects, old furniture or household items during a move, or any number of other projects. Anything that your normal waste management service would take for regular or bulk pickup should be able to go in a roll-off dumpster– and a lot more of it too. What you cannot throw into a dumpster typically falls into one of two categories. . Though there are some notable exceptions like old tires that have been barred from landfills for the sheer volume at which they are thrown out, most of what you can’t throw in a landfill and therefore can’t throw in your roll-off dumpster is either E-Waste or hazardous household waste (HHW).
Hazardous household waste
HHW is a wide category that covers anything that may be potentially harmful or reactive in a landfill. These may contain toxic, corrosive, ignitable, or reactive ingredients that won’t be safe to add to a landfill. While some hazardous items like cleaning chemicals, paint, or motor oil are fairly intuitive, you may not be aware of some items that may be hazardous. There are many items that are specifically banned from landfills here in Las Vegas, but some of the items that people commonly miss are:- Old Medications
- Ink or ink cartridges
- Adhesives, epoxy, or glue
- Human waste or any septic contents
- Bandages or wound dressings
- Grease trap contents
