  • Debris Recycling: The Importance Of Material Recovery Facilities

    August 9, 2021

    What Is An MRF?

A materials recovery facility, or MRF, is the next step in the process of debris recycling, which is the recycling of an assortment of materials, after the recycling is picked up. At a materials recovery facility, all of the materials recycled are sorted through to pick out and remove any trash and separate similar materials (such as cardboard/paper, aluminum, plastic, etc.) to collect them together.

MRFs are more convenient to the customer, because citizens don’t have to do preliminary sorting of recycling themselves. With a materials recovery facility, there is a greater incentive and ease-of-entry for everyone to recycle. If people had to sort out and separate materials within their recycling, they’d be deterred from doing it in the first place. That’s why we have materials recovery facilities to thank for making our lives easier while making a positive, green impact on the planet.

    Debris Recycling

Debris recycling goes by a number of names, including “single-stream recycling” or “mixed recycling,” and it’s the most customer-facing method of recycling.

Recycling can be a lot more complicated than people understand, and many don’t realize all of the different categories and levels that go into recycling certain materials. For example, there are two categories to recycling materials: category 1 and 2. Category 1 includes fibers, such as paper, magazines, etc. Category 2 includes glass bottles, plastic (which has different numbers for type of material within this), cans, etc. At some point in the recycling process, all of these materials have to be separated. With debris recycling, everything is hauled in together at the same time and eventually separated by workers at MRFs. Dual-stream recycling would have consumers sort their materials before a recycling facility picks them up.

    Debris Recycling at Lunas

Lunas, a cleaning specialist in construction clean up, commercial clean up, and residential cleaning, can handle much more than the normal, typical recycling. With our specialty dumpsters and materials recovery facilities, we offer a wide range of dumpsters to accommodate any project and type of debris. Lunas was founded on the vision of a future where all materials that are recyclable are recycled and reused. Very little of what is actually thrown away needs to be sent to the landfill, and our team at Lunas ensures that.

Lunas recycles all sorts of materials that will leave our customers satisfied not only with how easy it is to rent a dumpster to dispose of all construction-site materials but also with our quality, meaningful work. Our list of materials we recycle include:

    • Metal
    • Wood
    • Plastic
    • Cardboard
    • Drywall
    • Carpet Padding
    • Concrete
    • Asphalt
    • Glass
    • Tires/Rubber

Once we receive all of these materials at our materials recovery facility, each material is properly separated and prepared to be sold to buyers. For example, our metal is segregated into ferrous (iron) and non-ferrous metals and then taken back to buy-back centers for further processing; wood is taken to our grinding facility to later be sold for playground mix, landscaping, and even press board; concrete is cleaned and taken to crush plants to be used for base in new, later construction projects. With a materials recovery facility, everything that is recycled is carefully and conveniently sorted and repurposed for another use in an environmentally friendly way. And it does this all without a consumer’s trouble or energy.
